Howard Brown Health Center ( HBHC ) has announced a series of events that coincide with National LGBT Health Awareness Week, March 12-18. The theme of this national event is 'Own Your Health. Get Checked Out,' and the objective is to encourage the LGBT community to be aware of their own health, and to become and stay healthy through regular physical exams and check-ups.
The following scheduled events will occur at HBHC, 4025 N. Sheridan, unless otherwise noted:
March 11, 1:00-3:30 p.m.: HBHC will host the forum 'LGBT Substance Abuse for Persons over 50.' Call ( 312 ) 458-3610.
March 11, 1:30-2:30 p.m.: Curious about substance abuse treatment? Concerned about your own alcohol or drug use? Worried about a friend or partner's use? Speak with one of our counselors during the Contemplations drop-in. This is a great opportunity to learn more about our 'Recovering with Pride' and 'Crystal Clear' programs.
March 12, 6:00-10:00 p.m.: It's the L Word at T's Restaurant and Bar, 5025 N. Clark. Talk to Howard Brown staff about health services, watch the L Word at 9 p.m., and participate in a free raffle that includes tickets to 'A Taste for Every Palate,' HBHC's May 22 fund-raiser.
Monday through Friday, 1:00-2:00 p.m.: Meet with one of our mental health professionals for a free depression screening to help sort it out. No appointment necessary.
March 13, 11:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m.: Chat and hang out with members of the youth services staff. Talk about the Broadway Youth Center, the Mentor Program, and the unique needs of the youth community.
March 14, 11:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.: Interested in cutting-edge research? Learn about Howard Brown current research initiatives and sign up to be part of a current study with the nationally recognized research facility.
March 15, 9:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.: It's women's day at Howard Brown! Come and speak with our new patient navigator, Christina Santiago, who will be handing out Healthy Sex Kits.
March 15, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.: Early to Bed, a women-owned store and Web site that sells sex toys and erotic gifts to people of all genders and orientations, will be here.
March 15, 6:00- 8:00 p.m.: There will be a Women's Open House to meet HBHC's providers and staff.
March 16, 11:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Come and learn about Howard Brown's programs and services geared specifically to trans individuals. Participate in gender-clever activities and meet some trans staff and staff allies.
March 17, 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.: FREE HIV and STD testing. It's available all day and no appointment is necessary.
March 18, 1:30-2:30 p.m.: Curious about substance abuse treatment? Concerned about your own alcohol or drug use? Worried about a friend or partner's use? Speak with one of HBHC's counselors during the Contemplations drop-in.
