Three local organizations have put their heads together, and with the help of youth, created an educational video geared towards youth about HIV.
Beyondmedia Education, in partnership with About Face Youth Theatre and Broadway Youth Center ( BYC ) , created a 20-minute educational video called 'HIV: Hey, It's Viral!' The film, which is geared toward youth, uses fun music and quirky animation to discussion the basics of HIV transmission, prevention and so much more.
Youth today don't know of an age without HIV/AIDS. In 2006, the three organizations came together and discussed the issue.
'We had this idea,' said Beyondmedia distribution coordinator Simon Fisher. 'What is it like to be a young person, especially a young queer person of color, and having that particular experience?'
In July 2007, the three organizations conducted an intensive two-week workshop for about 30 youth about HIV/AIDS. People from different decades were involved in the project, from young people in their teens to facilitators in the 40s and 50s. All walks of life were involved, such as doctors, young health educators, scholars, HIV/AIDS activists, young people living with the virus and more.
The youth, who were very involved in every aspect of the project, especially during the workshop stage, brought a lot to the table.
'One of the things youth brought very clearly was their perspective, growing up in a world of AIDS,' said Beyondmedia executive director Salome Chasnoff. 'There was no change in their experience, like us.'
The project doesn't stop with a 20-minute video. The organizations are piloting a sex-positive program that will roll out Dec. 1 in 10 Chicago public schools, yet to be named. Chasnoff said they will be working closely with Chicago Public Schools, and the curriculum will include teacher training, a DVD and more.
Those involved hope that through this unique film and curriculum, young people get the message in a positive and healthy manner. 'We want them to know it's not a death sentence, but it does change your life dramatically, and that right now, it's not curable,' Chasnoff said.
A screening of 'HIV: Hey, It's Viral!' will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at the Center on Halsted's Hoover-Leppen Theater, 3656 N. Halsted. The evening will kick off with a 6:30 p.m. reception. The program, which includes a performance by About Face Youth Theatre, the premiere and a Q&A with BYC youth and staff, begins at 7 p.m.
