At a time when diversity has been in the forefront of the entertainment spotlight, the Grammys, which took place Feb. 15, was ( again ) notable for showcasing wins, presentations and performances of performers of various ages, races and sexual orientations.
Regarding award wins, no one person dominated. Rapper Kendrick Lamar ( who gave an electrifying performance ) won five awardsbut none in the major categories. "Uptown Funk," by Mark Ronson and singer Bruno Mars, was named record of the year; Amy Wadge and singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran won song of the year for "Thinking Out Loud"; and Taylor Swift took album of the year for 1989, which has "Bad Blood" and "Shake It Off" among its hits.
Swift took the stage to deliver a message that some interpreted as a swipe at rapper Kanye West, whose new song has him claiming to have made her famous. She said, "As the first woman to win album of the year twice, I want to say to all the young women out there, there are going to be people along the way who will try to undermine your success or who will try to take credit for your accomplishments or your fame.
"But if you just focus on the work and you don't let those people sidetrack you," she continued, "someday when you get where you are going, you'll look around and you will know that it was you and the people who love you who put you there, and that will be the greatest feeling in the world."
Among other notable winners were Justin Bieber nabbing his first Grammy ever for best dance recording for "Where Are U Now" ( with Skrillex and Diplo ); Meghan Trainor, who snagged the award for best new artist; Chicago legend Mavis Staples, whose See That My Grave Is Kept Clean won for best American roots performance; out singer Ricky Martin, who won for best Latin pop album for A Quien Quiera Escuchar ( Deluxe Edition ); and the production Hamilton, which won for best musical-theater album.
Tributes were also a major part of the Grammys. Included among the salutes was Lady Gaga's tribute to the late singer David Bowie. Wearing an outfit that was an homage to Bowie's "Life on Mars" look, she sang several of his hits, including "Space Oddity," "Changes," "Fame" and "Let's Dance," among others. |
