The acclaimed Broadway production of I Am My Own Wife, Doug Wright's 2004 Pulitzer Prize-winning play starring Jefferson Mays, will be presented as part of the Goodman Theatre's 2004-2005 season in the Albert, appearing Jan. 8 through Feb. 13, 2005.
The production, the first to appear anywhere in the country following its hugely successful Broadway run, is directed by Moisés Kaufman. It made its world premiere at About Face Theatre in Chicago last year.
Based on a true story, and inspired by interviews conducted by the playwright over several years, I Am My Own Wife tells the tale of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, a real-life German transvestite who managed to survive the Nazi onslaught as well as the following, repressive Communist regime. The one-man play stars Obie Award-winner Jefferson Mays as more than 40 characters, including the controversial figure herself.
The New York Times has described I Am My Own Wife as 'fascinating and beautifully written,' and Mr. Mays' as giving 'a simply splendid, genuinely artful performance.' The New York Post hailed it as 'The dramatic event of the year,' and 'an amazing theatrical experience,' while the Wall Street
Journal said 'Jefferson Mays' bull's-eye performance is amazing, bordering on the miraculous. Everything about I Am My Own Wife is
outstanding.'
