After months of turmoil at Chicago's LGBT library, Gerber/ Hart Library and archives has announced a new president and board members.
Brad Tucker, who served as president of the organization from 1997-1999 has replaced Karen Sendziak before the expiration of her term, according to a statement put out by the library. Sendziak will remain on the board as treasurer, according to the release.
Windy City Times has been investigating the library since January, when a "for rent" sign at the library's former Edgewater home indicated the organization was relocating amid questions surrounding its governance.
Gerber/Hart moved to Rogers Park this spring but has yet to re-open. Its new space is currently under construction. The library has not said when the space will be complete.
Tucker has been a steadfast supporter of Sendziak as community members, former board members and volunteers have accused her of hijacking the over three-decades-old organization. Sendziak had been president of the organization for more than eight years, a term that exceeded the limits set by bylaws that were believed to be in effect until earlier this year.
A group of former board members and volunteers calling themselves "Friends of the Gerber/Hart Library and Archives," has questioned the organization's governance and legal standing. They will not say if they are taking legal action against Sendziak or Gerber/Hart. Gail Morse, the attorney representing the group, declined to say if the election of Tucker changes the group's plans.
In a statement, Tucker vowed to prioritize the library's re-opening, board development, community outreach, management and fundraising.
"Moving to 6500 N. Clark St. will mark the beginning of another new chapter in Gerber/Hart's 31 year history and I am honored to be able to be a part of it," said Tucker in the statement.
According to that release, Don Landers remains on the board. John Orwat, a Loyola professor has been elected secretary. Gavin Rehfeldt will serve as the library's exhibition coordinator.
