Gerber/Hart Library commemorated African-American History Month with a program on Bayard Rustin Feb. 8. Historian John D'Emilio, Director of the Gender and Women's Studies program at UIC, reflected upon Rustin's life, work, and place in LGBT history. D'Emilio's biography of Rustin, Lost Prophet: The Life and Times of Bayard Rustin, was nominated for a National Book Award in the Non-Fiction category last year. The work also won the Stonewall Book Award for Non-Fiction given by the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Roundtable of the American Library Association. A dramatic reading of some of Rustin's own writings was given by Sanford Gaylord. The award-winning documentary about Rustin's life, Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin, was screened.
