Republican Rep. Ron Sandack (81st) says he is a solid yes vote on Illinois' marriage equality bill, but opponents are targeting him anyway.
Sandack is the latest target of a slew of anti-gay demonstrations planned by the Illinois Family Institute, an anti-LGBT organization. But LGBT proponents will counter that demonstration, scheduled for Saturday, May 4.
Sandack recently voiced his support for SB10, which would legalize same-sex marriage in Illinois.
"It's a question of freedom, fundamental fairness and equality under the law," Sandack told Windy City Times. "Those are core Republican and pro-family concepts," he added.
Anti-gay groups have heavily targeted wavering state reps. in recent weeks as the end of the spring legislative session looms. But LGBT groups like Gay Liberation Network and the Illinois Unites for Marriage coalition have turned out large counter-protests to meet them.
Gov. Pat Quinn told Windy City Times April 29 that he felt the bill's sponsors were very close to calling the bill for a vote.
The Sandack rallies will be held outside his Downers Grove office, 633 Rogers St. at 10:30 a.m. May 4.
