Gay, lesbian critics honor 'Slave,' Franco, Tomlin

The Gay and Lesbian Entertainment Critics Association ( GALECA ) has announced the winners of its annual Dorian Awards Jan. 21 in Hollywood, Calif., according to a press release.
The winners were in 21 categories spanning film and television.
In the area of film, 12 Years a Slave was named Film of the Year over such competition as Dallas Buyers Club and Blue Is the Warmest Color. However, Matthew McConaughey of "Dallas" won for Film Performance of the Year ( Actor ), beating co-star Jared Leto. Cate Blanchett won for Film Performance of the Year ( Actress ) for Blue Jasmine.
Blue Is the Warmest Color won Foreign Language Film of the Year honors and Bridegroom was named Documentary of the Year.
Television was also honored. The Liberace movie Behind the Candelabra and the series Orange Is the New Black tied for TV Drama of the Year, while Girls won for TV Comedy of the Year. Dame Shirley Bassey won for TV Musical Performance of the Year for singing "Goldfinger" at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2013. "Orange" also won for LGBT TV Show of the year.
Emphasizing the different nature of this event, GALECA named Rachel Maddow Wilde Wit of the Year and James Franco Wilde Artist of the Year. The We're Wilde About You ( Rising Star Award ) went to trans actress Laverne Cox while Lily Tomlin received the Timeless Award.
There were also awards such as Campy Flick of the Year ( which I'm So Excited! won ) and Unsung TV Show of the Year ( HBO's Getting On ).
GALECA's annual toast—attended mainly by members but open to winners, nominees and their representatives—will be held Sunday, March 9, in Hollywood, Calif. See the full list of winners at galeca.com . |
