AB FAB IN NEW YORK
Saturday, Feb. 8
COM, 7 p.m., 1:30 a.m.
New! After Edina learns that her estranged son Serge (Josh Hamilton) is gay and living in New York, she decides to cross the Atlantic with Patsy in search of him. After attending Fashion Week, the girls pretend to be a lesbian couple who want to get married in order to pry Serge's address from a gay counselor and wedding minister (Whoopi Goldberg). Edina and son eventually reunite in the stacks of The Strand Bookstore, where she discovers that Serge first fled home because he felt Edina's preconceptions of gay people wouldn't allow him the freedom to be both gay AND boring. In my favorite moment, Edina tries to remember the shorthand name by which people refer to Sept. 11. ('... 7-11 ? .... 24/7 ? .... 7-11, isn't it?'). With cameos by Rufus Wainwright, Debbie Harry, and Graham Norton. The special originally aired in the U.K under the title 'Gay' — (and its title remains 'Gay' in the program's opening credits)—but Comedy Central has oddly re-dubbed it AB FAB IN NEW YORK.
