The Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, 9603 Woods Dr., Skokie, will show the documentary Dear Fredy on Thursday, June 20, 6:30-8 p.m.
The movie shares the true story of Fredy Hirschan openly gay Jewish athlete who brought hope, comfort, and inspiration to thousands of children and young people during the Holocaust.
In the Czech Republic, Hirsch was able to convince SS officials to appoint him to a leadership position within the concentration camp Theresienstadt, where he was able to improve conditions in the children's barracks. After he was deported to Auschwitz, Hirsch received permission from the infamous Dr. Josef Mengele to run a day-care center for some 600 children.
A post-screening discussion will reflect on the heroic actions of other Upstanders within the LGBTQ+ community.
The event is free, with museum admission. Reservations are required; visit www.ilholocaustmuseum.org/pages/programs/events/ . |
