GLAAD celebrates LGBTQ-inclusive 70th Annual Emmy Awards

September 18, 2018, New York, NY GLAAD today celebrated the LGBTQ-inclusive winners of the 70th Annual Emmy Awards, while encouraging greater diversity and LGBTQ representation throughout the entertainment industry. GLAAD's President and CEO, Sarah Kate Ellis attended the Awards.
"The 70th Annual Emmy Awards nominees were some of the most diverse and exciting ever, with LGBTQ creators like Ryan Murphy and LGBTQ-focused shows like RuPaul's Drag Race and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story taking home top honors tonight," said Sarah Kate Ellis, President and CEO of GLAAD. "The Television Academy is reflecting how both audiences and critics embrace diverse LGBTQ images on television, and while there is still work to be accomplished, tonight was a truly powerful evening for LGBTQ representation."
RuPaul's Drag Race made history, taking home the award for Outstanding Reality Competition Program and Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program, in the same year and earning five Emmy Awards in total for its tenth season.
Last weekend's Creative Arts Emmys also included several LGBTQ victories, including out trans filmmaker Yance Ford winning the Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking trophy for his Netflix documentary Strong Island and out actress and GLAAD's Vito Russo Award recipient, Samira Wiley, winning for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama series on Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale.

GLAAD's "Where We Are on TV" report analyzes the overall diversity of primetime scripted series regulars on broadcast networks and looks at the number of LGBTQ characters on cable networks and streaming services.
