Author Joan Marie Johnson will conduct a book lecture and signing, co-sponsored by The Chicago Women's History Center, at 6 p.m. on Oct. 23 at The Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton St., Chicago.

In her book Funding Feminism, Monied Women, Philanthropy and the Women's Movement 1870 - 1967, Dr. Johnson explores how a group of affluent white women from the late nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries advanced the status of all women through acts of philanthropy. As the struggle for full economic and political power and self-determination for women continues today, Johnson reveals how generous women helped shape the movement for women's rights. This history also shows that tensions over wealth and power, that persist today, have deep historical roots.

After her talk, Johnson will sign copies of the book, which will be available for purchase.

Johnson is a historian and Director for Faculty in the Office of the Provost at Northwestern University.
