Freeskier Gus Kenworthy has become the first action-sports athlete to openly say he is gay, USA Today reported.
Kenworthy first told his story to ESPN The Magazine, saying, "I never got to be proud of what I did in Sochi [in 2014], because I felt so horrible about what I didn't do. I didn't want to come out as the silver medalist from Sochi; I wanted to come out as the best freeskier in the world."
Several other athletes have showed their support, including snowboarder Sage Kotsenburg and Olympic gold-medalist freeskier Joss Christensen.
Kenworthy, 24, has been the Association of Freeskiing Professionals' top athlete for five consecutive years. He is the only athlete who is a top contender in the sport's three disciplines: halfpipe, slopestyle and big air.
