Wingspan, the LGBT community center of Southern Arizona, honored lesbian activist Joyce Bolinger with their 2012 Godat Award Sept. 29.
Bolinger, a longtime Chicago activist, has been a key volunteer with Wingspan, based in Tucson.
Wingspan stated: "The Godat Award was inaugurated in 1998 to recognize extraordinary long-term contributions by an individual to Southern Arizona's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Ken Godat, after whom this award was named, was the first recipient. Since its inception, the Godat Award has celebrated the personal commitment and public advocacy of ... community leaders."
Bolinger retired as Deputy Commissioner of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs before moving to Tucson. She has played a role in the Lesbian Looks film series, is a past board member of Wingspan, and spearheaded distribution of the group's newsletter, among her many volunteer efforts. |
