Gay-rights groups are applauding last week's re-introduction of federal hate-crimes legislation in Congress.
The Log Cabin Republicans and the Human Rights Campaign have issued kudos to the bill's 50 co-sponsors in the Senate and 180 in the House.
The Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act, formerly the Hate Crimes Prevention Act, would amend the current federal hate-crimes statute—which covers race, religion, color and national origin—to include real or perceived gender, sexual orientation and disability.
