On Friday, Sept. 9, 5:30-7:30 p.m., Center on Halsted will host a special Family Equality educational panel discussion about issues facing LGBTQ+ people and families.
According to Family Equality, at least 11.3 million U.S. adults identify as LGBTQ+, and many of them have or are considering building their families. In fact, 3.7 million children under the age of 18 have an LGBTQ+ parent, and our research shows that nearly 63% of LGBTQ+ millennials are considering expanding their families in the years ahead.
However:
There is NO federal law prohibiting anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination;
12 states allow adoption and foster care agencies to turn away qualified LGBTQ+ parents; and
Almost 300 anti-LGBTQ+ state bills have been introduced in this year alone threatening LGBTQ+ individuals' ability to exist in classrooms, access gender-affirming healthcare and more.
Family Equality's CEO, Stacey Stevenson (she/they), will be the event's moderator. Their own story is at https://www.familyequality.org/stories/stacey-rileys-journey/?_ga=2.259445066.137609800.1662380194-1613977997.1662380194.
