It definitely is that time of the year: awards season.
The BAFTAs (British Academy Film Awards) took place March 13 at London's Royal Albert Hall, returning to an in-person event after going virtual in 2021 due to the pandemic.
Dune was the big winner, with five wins in the craft categories, Variety noted. Jane Campion's queer film The Power of the Dog won the coveted best film BAFTA and best director.
However, Campion could not be present at the awards, "Power" lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch accepted the award on her behalf. Another notable absentee was Will Smith, who won best actor for King Richard. Both Campion and Smith were in Los Angeles attending the Critics Choice Awards, where they also won.
Some of the other winners included Belfast (Outstanding British Film), Drive My Car (Film Not in the English Language), Summer of Soul (Documentary), Joanna Scanlan (Leading Actress, for After Love), queer actress Ariana Debose (Supporting Actress, for West Side Story), deaf actor Troy Kotsur (Supporting Actor, for CODA), Lashana Lynch (EE Rising Star Award) and Cruella (Costume Design).
The awards were hosted by Rebel Wilson, who, among other things, gave the finger to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
As previously mentioned, the 27th Annual Critics Choice Awards were also held this weekend, on March 13 in Los Angeles' Century Plaza Hotel.
The Power of the Dog carried a lot of power of this side of the Atlantic as well, earning four awards total, including best director and best picture. Smith won for best actor while Jessica Chastain took the best actress honor for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. Kotsur and DeBose also won Critics Choice Awards.
On the television side, HBO and HBO Max received 10 winsthe most of any network or streaming platform. Those included three for Succession (out of eight nominations); two each for The White Lotus (including one for out actor Murray Bartlett, for Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made For Television) and Mare of Easttown; and one each for Hacks, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Oslo.
The queer FX show Pose received multiple nodsincluding for actors Billy Porter and Michaela Jae Rodriguezbut came up empty. Some of the other LGBTQ+ nominees included Josie Totah (Best supporting actress in a comedy series, for Peacock's Saved by the Bell), Bowen Yang (Best supporting actor in a comedy series, for Saturday Night Live) and It's a Sin (Best limited series).
The Apple+ show Ted Lasso dominated most of the comedy categories.
