Evanston, IL, Nov. 26, 2014 On Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. the Unitarian Church of Evanston will host a panel discussion on LGBT youth homelessness to gain understanding and identify opportunities for action.
Included on the panel is Pastor Alli Baker, Associate Minister at Wellington Ave United Church of Christ, whose theological work invites queer interpretations of the Bible. She works primarily with youth, including those who access services at the Broadway Youth Center and Night Ministry. Rev. Aidan McCormack is the Community & Congregational Relations Coordinator at Night Ministry. The Night Ministry compassionately provides housing, health care, outreach, spiritual care, and social services to adults and youth who struggle with homelessness, poverty and loneliness. Bonsai Bermudez is the Artistic Director of Youth Empowerment Performance Project ( YEPP ). YEPP is a performance healing group for street-based queer youth. Their mission is to seek a safe environment for LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness to explore their history, investigate new ways to address their struggles and to celebrate their strengths through the process of developing a theatrical performance piece. There will be a youth from YEPP on the panel as well.
The format includes 45 minutes of questions moderated by Alex J. Segneri, Executive Director at Foundation for a United Front followed by 45 minutes of question and answer from the audience. The event is scheduled to conclude at 8:30 pm.
The event is sponsored by the Unitarian Church of Evanston's Rainbow Alliance and Food and Shelter social justice teams. Unitarian Universalism is a faith tradition of "deeds not creeds".
