The Evangelical Lutheran Church elected its first openly transgender bishop on May 8, The Hill reported.

The Rev. Megan Rohrer, who uses the pronouns they/them, was elected bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Sierra Pacific synod.

Rohrer, 41, is the first transgender person known to serve as a bishop in any major U.S. Christian denomination, according to the Associated Press. Rohrer is currently the pastor of Grace Lutheran Church in San Francisco and a community chaplain coordinator for the San Francisco Police Department.

Rohrer received a Master of Divinity and completed post-graduate course work in Christian Education at Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, California, according to the church's website.
