The Netherlands Prime Minister Mark Rutte challenged Hungary Prime Minister Viktor Orban to trigger the process of leaving the European Union (EU) as an argument over LGBTQ rights deepened Orban's isolation in the bloc, Time reported.
During a summit in Brussels on June 24, Rutte asked why Orban doesn't leave the EU if it doesn't subscribe to its values, according to diplomats familiar with the comments.
Additionally, Sweden Prime Minister Stefan Lofven told the leaders that his country's taxpayers wouldn't contribute funds to member states that don't respect human rights.
The outrage comes after Hungary's parliament recently approved legislation outlawing content for children that can be deemed to "promote homosexuality." The bill paired the LGBTQ community with pedophilia.
Only Poland and Slovenia are said to have supported Orban over the law, according to RFERL.org . |
