Esquire magazine's editorial staff curated a list of the "most fun and inclusive LGBTQ+-friendly bars"and the choices may seem surprising.
The magazine chose the Uptown spots Big Chicks and Carol's Pub as well as the Andersonville establishment Farragut's.
Regarding Big Chicks, Esquire wrote, "Big Chicks serves a diverse crowd it's young, it's old, it's one of the only places you'll see gay men and lesbians together! and, well, sometimes it over-serves them." While Esquire explained that Carol's isn't "explicitly a gay bar," it added that "the legendary [house band], Diamondback, has a 25,000-song repertoire and a boot collection that could make a gay cowboy cry." As for Farragut's, it's "a lesbian bar, but I'm pretty sure only half of the patrons who are there on any given night know it," according to the publication.
Three other bars in the Midwest made the list. The magazine also named Indianapolis' English Ivy's, Kansas City's Sidekicks Saloon and St. Louis' Bastille among the best LGBTQ+ bars.
