LarsErik Films is proud to announce that Erik Larson's new short film series DOOR MAT will make its Midwest premiere, one night only, on Friday Sept. at Chicago Filmmakers, 5243 N. Clark St., in Chicago. Showtimes are 7 p.m. (sold out) and 9:30 p.m. Net proceeds benefit the March on Springfield for Marriage Equality.
DOOR MAT is a series of 3 short films starring Uncle Alice as Doreena Matune, a Southern widow relocating to Southern California and starting her life anew. Auntie Dor battles houseguests, both invited and uninvited, who welcome themselves into her home and her life. Is she is incredibly kind, or simply the world's ultimate DOOR MAT? In DOOR MAT: Movin' on In, Doreena relocates to California, and becomes fast friends with pushy neighbors Maggie Magnolia and her daughter Starlette — a budding, yet hopeless, actress/model. Doreena soon realizes she's not the only one who's Movin' On In. In DOOR MAT: Crazy Love, Doreena's son Hank shows up for a visit with a special surprise - his blushing bride Suzy. They are so much in love it hurts. But these lovebirds soon learn there is a fine line between love and crazy. In DOOR MAT: It's a Boy!, favorite nephew Buckley shows up with Xoie, a young gal in a world of trouble. When Auntie Dor goes snooping, she finds there might be a little something more to the situation than meets the eye.
DOOR MAT marks the return of former Chicagoan Erik Larson after a 15 year hiatus. These are his first films since his highly acclaimed all hooker feel good musical feature METER GIRLS, which Larson won a Telly Award for in 1998. Over a span of almost 30 years, Larson chiseled his mark in the annals of Chicago filmmaking as one of the only known originators of feature films completely crafted in a Super 8mm sound format. The DOOR MAT film series sneak previewed at Quentin Tarantino's nationally-known Los Angeles art house the New Beverly Cinema to a jam-packed house and great acclaim. DOOR MAT represents Erik's first foray into the digital HD arena. Larson's mini-feline epic KITTEH HUTCH, was an official selection for both the Chicago Reeling's Dyke Delicious Festival and Los Angeles' Mockfest Film Festival.
"I am very proud of DOOR MAT," says Larson, "because it reunites the many people that I've worked with over the years, and it's exciting that these people came out to LA from all over the country to work on these films. I wrote them as a love letter to Uncle Alice and I am extremely proud of the work that everyone did. They brought their A game and the films came out with a lot of heart." While watching DOOR MAT one viewer went so far as to describe them as "quietly profound."
Uncle Alice exclaims, "I am thrilled to have worked with Erik again and delighted that he's bringing the DOOR MAT project to my hometown of Chicago. There is much to be said about bringing it all home! After premiering DOOR MAT in Los Angeles to fabulous reviews and responses from people who are not familiar with our work, I look forward to the reaction from Chicagoans who've been fans and followers for many years. Howdy Chicago!"
