Griffin's Show at The Gibson Ampitheatre in Universal City Will Help Provide Vital and Lifesaving Services for LGBTQ Youth in Crisis
West Hollywood, CA — This Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender History Month, we have mourned the unnecessary loss of young lives, and have also witnessed an increase in awareness about suicide prevention. Among the many efforts to change the culture of hate, bullying and harassment that has led to the suicide deaths of several young LGBT and questioning people, the entertainment community has been especially supportive, including Emmy Award winning performer Kathy Griffin, who will donate her salary from her December 16th concert at the Universal Ampitheatre in Universal City to The Trevor Project.
Passionate and outspoken, Griffin responded swiftly to the recent tragic and unnecessary suicides of young people who were taunted and bullied. She appeared on "Larry King Live," posted an urgent message on her web site and coined the phrase, "trickle down homophobia."
"We couldn't be more grateful to Kathy Griffin and others in the entertainment industry who have shown a remarkable outpouring of support for The Trevor Project," said Charles Robbins, Executive Director of The Trevor Project. "With their tremendous efforts and from others across the country, Trevor can better spread the message that depression is treatable and suicide is preventable."
"When we hear about these tragic suicides, whether we are a part of this community or not, we feel helpless. We question what we can do and how we can help. My goal for the December 16th event is for audience members to be able to approach The Trevor Project volunteers to obtain information on how they can work their phone banks in order to save lives," said Griffin. "P.S. Don't worry, the show itself will be my normal offensive material."
The Trevor Project is the leading national organization focused on crisis intervention and suicide prevention efforts among LGBTQ youth. Every day, The Trevor Project saves young lives through its free and confidential lifeline, in-school workshops, educational materials, online resources and advocacy. The organization was founded in 1998 by three filmmakers whose film, "Trevor," a comedy/drama about a gay teenager who attempts suicide, received the 1994 Academy Award® for Best Short Film ( Live Action ) .
