U.S. Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., recently made a formal request for $400,000 to support Howard Brown Health Center's (HBHC) medical services for the uninsured during his testimony before the House Appropriations health subcommittee.
Emanuel told the subcommittee, 'I am asking for much-needed financial support for a vital community health center in my district ... to support its efforts to provide primary medical care services to individuals who need it most.'
The services provided seek to address the Department of Health and Human Services' Healthy People 2010 goals, particularly with regards to addressing health disparities for underserved and minority populations. Howard Brown provides outreach and comprehensive treatment for major health concerns such as HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, cancer, drug and alcohol abuse, diabetes, and other issues. All primary medical care services are supported by case management, behavioral health services, health education and specialty care services.
'Howard Brown Health Center's ability to provide comprehensive primary care is a key component in addressing the health needs of the LGBT community,' said Leigh Roberts MD, HBHC's Medical Director.
Emanuel's testimony before the House Appropriations subcommittee on behalf of Howard Brown Health Center is a key step toward securing the funding in the Fiscal Year 2004 Appropriations legislation.
'This support will go a long way to ensuring that Howard Brown Health Center can continue to provide important medical services to those in need,' said Courtney Reid, HBHC's Deputy Director.
