Chicago, IL- LGBT youth from the organization Gender JUST released a mayoral candidates scorecard today ranking the six candidates on issues important to queer youth. "Issues such as education, resource allocation, reproductive rights, and criminal justice are very important to our organization," said Lucky Mosqueda, a youth member of Gender JUST, "so its very important that we know where the candidates stand on these issues."
Miguel Del Valle fared the best in most of the areas, with Rahm Emanuel coming in last in all but one category. "Rahm got an F- in criminal justice because of his role in welfare reform and the CHA's Plan for Transformation," said Sam Finkelstein, community organizer with Gender JUST, "we're careful to be non-partisan, but it's hard not to be vocal in our opposition to Emanuel with his total disregard for our communities."
Miguel Del Valle, Carol Moseley Braun, Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins, and William Dock Walls scored high for their opposition to Renaissance 2010 — but all but Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins lost points for their support for more police in Chicago schools. "We fight against cops in the schools, said Ahkia Daniels, Gender JUST member from South Shore High School, "because how can you fight violence with guns?"
"This has been such an important project for us," said Benji Perry, Gender JUST member, "not only has it been able to inform our communities, it has got us all excited to get out there and vote."
