Dylan Rice, an openly gay alt-rock singer entrenched in the Chicago scene, recently released the CD Electric Grids & Concrete Towers.
If you're expecting a frothy musical concoction, look elsewhere. On the moving "Motel Daughters," Rice sings, "Haley was changing the sheets/She was in room 13/When the meth lab exploded/And then she couldn't see." And "Homewrecker's Lament" looks at sexual confusion and marital infidelity, with the wife catching the husband in a post-coital situation.
However, there is some emotional light as well. "Merge" is a catchy tune with lyrics such as "Like rivers eat rivers, merge with me"even if, at times, the music threatens to overtake the musician. "Emma Jane" might be the most infectious song on the CDa ditty about a woman who "could dance all night in her underwear."
"Eggshells & Landmines" may affect your heart as much as "Emma Jane" affects your feet. The song is a must-hear for anyone who's had to endure heartbreakand that's pretty much all of us. And what listener, gay or otherwise, can't relate to the lyrics in "The Chaseable? ( "But just as we're about to tangle/You're running away/You don't loveyou go for a ride..." )
Overall, "Grids" is an extremely solid effort. Rice, with his Morrissey-like voice ( and I kept thinking of such songs as "The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get" while listening to Rice's CD ) effectively conveys a multitude of emotions, ranging from pleasure to pain. Grade: B+
