The Mexican restaurant Cantina 1910 will open in Chicago's Andersonville neighborhood on Sept. 16 at 5025 N. DMK Burger Bar and Fish Bar have opened at Navy Pier, 600 E. Grand Ave. Menu items are $3-$24. Unique to the Navy Pier locations will be a children's menu, a walk-up take-out window featuring adult house-made frozen beverages, and the only new outdoor seating space on the pier.
Kerry Simon, a Las Vegas-based "Rock n' Roll Chef" and Iron Chef alum, has died at age 60, according to E! Online. He passed away on Sept. 11 after a two-year battle with the brain disease multiple system atrophy. Prior to his death, he was confined to a wheelchair and was unable to speak as a result of his illness, which is incurable. In Chicago, Simon was also behind Chuck's: A Kerry Simon Kitchen, in the Hard Rock Hotel. The restaurant's website reads, in part, "We will be forever grateful for his rock-n-roll approach to modern cuisine, boundless energy and gentle spirit."
In honor of National Cheeseburger Day on Friday, Sept. 18, Adamus ( in the Silversmith Hotel, 10 S. Wabash Ave. ) is offering its prime-beef item that features Midwestern-raised grain-fed Angus beef, potato bun, house-made chipotle aioli, tobacco onions and Carr Valley applewood smoked cheddar cheese. George Kovach is the new pastry chef at TWO, 1132 W. Grand Ave. Kovach's creations include, among other items, a pumpkin cheesecake with pumpkin sorbet, candied pepitas, caramelized white chocolate and cocoa nibs; and a chocolate pot de creme with hazelnut ice cream and chocolate crunch. The pastry chef brings years of experience in his specialty, crafting menus for Rocksalt in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Manhattan's Craft New York.
Troquet River North, 111 W. Huron St., is offering a few specials to celebrate the traditional Bavarian beer festival.
