Dignity/Chicago, the organization for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Cathoics, will honor 17th century Mexican holy woman, Sor Juana, on Sunday, April 25, as it continues its monthly prayer services that take inspiration from and honors holy women.

The prayer service will begin at 4 p.m. in the Wesley Room at DignityChicago, 3344 N. Broadway, Chicago. An essay about Sor Juana may be obtained prior to each Sunday session at DignityChicago, or by calling (312) 458-9438. The service takes place prior to the 5 Sunday Mass.

Sor Juana has been called the 'first feminist of the Americas.' A poet, songwriter and woman of letters, her 'Reply to Sor Philothea' defended a woman's right to an education. She was silenced at the age of 44 by Church officials threatened by her competence. Her feastday is April 17.

Other holy women to be honored in the coming months at the DignityChicago prayer services include: Catherine of Siena, May 23; Prisca, June 20; and Mary of Magdala, July 22.

The prayer services were developed by FutureChurch (info@futurechurch.org) in partnership with Call to Action (info@cta-usa.org) and are designed to focus on the witness of faith given by women throughout the history of the Catholic Church.
