On the first episode of her podcast, "4D with Demi Lovato," the singer comes out as non-binary and explores this new journey through their conversation with gender non-conforming writer, performer and public speaker Alok Vaid-Menon.
During the podcast, she says, "Over the past year and a half I've been doing some healing and self-reflective work. And through this work, I've had the revelation that I identify as non-binary. With that said, I'll be officially changing my pronouns to they/them. I feel that this best represents the fluidity I feel in my gender expression and allows me to feel most authentic and true to the person I both know I am, and am still discovering.
"In this first episode, I am excited to share with you what this means to me and what it may look like for other people. I want to make it clear that I'm still learning and coming into myself, and I don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson."
Lovato and Vaid-Menon discuss language and pronouns, while Lovato talks about ignoring their truth: "In 2018, when I overdosed, I feel like the reason why that happened was because I was ignoring my truth, and I was suppressing who I really am in order to please stylists or team members."
On Twitter, Lovato stated, "This has come after a lot of healing & self-reflective work. I'm still learning & coming into myself, & I don't claim to be an expert or a spokesperson. Sharing this with you now opens another level of vulnerability for me."
"Gender is not simply male or female. Non-binary people live outside of those rigid categories and they should be respected for who they are, which includes using the pronouns they tell us to use," said GLAAD Head of Talent Anthony Ramos in a statement. "People identifying as non-binary is not newand recognition and visibility of non-binary people has been growing. Demi has always been one of the loudest and proudest advocates for LGBTQ people and issues. In sharing their story today, they will educate countless people around the world and reach other non-binary people with a message of pride."
"4D With Demi Lovato" is now on Apple Podcasts, Audacy, Spotify and everywhere podcasts are available to stream. New episodes of the podcast made in partnership with Cadence13, OBB Sound, and SB Projects will be available on Wednesdays.
