An exhibit featuring the works of genderqueer artist Del LaGrace Volcano will now be displayed at Center on Halsted, 3656 N. Halsted St., through the end of April.
Volcano (they/them) has created images that defy gender norms and skewer sexual conventions for decades.
Their celebrated work was featured in the exhibition "About Face: Stonewall, Revolt and New Queer Art" at the Wrightwood 659 Gallery. (Also, Volcano talked about their art in 2019 with Windy City Times; see www.windycitytimes.com/lgbt/ART-Del-LaGrace-Volcano-About-Face-photographer-on-works-gender-terrorism/66731.html.&; Email events@centeronhalsted.org to book a private showing.
There is a content warning on the Center's website about Volcano's work: "Freedom of speech is the foundation of our communities and our nation. The works of Del LaGrace Volcano contain nudity, and may awe, illuminate, challenge, unsettle, confound, provoke, and, at times, offend. Center on Halsted defends the artist's freedom to create content and exhibit such work anywhere in the world, and we recognize the privilege of living in a country where creating, exhibiting, and experiencing such work is a constitutional right." |
