Flicka Finds a Future
Before there was Mr. Ed, there was a horse named Flicka. Flicka didn't speak like Ed, but was made famous all the same in a 1950s TV series and, earlier, by the 1943 film My Friend Flicka, starring the late actor Roddy McDowall. Now a new generation will meet the friendly horse in the remake, to be helmed by gay director Michael Mayer ( A Home at the End of the World ) . The story concerns a young girl ( Big Fish's Alison Lohman ) with dreams of running her family's Wyoming ranch, who finds and claims a wild horse she names Flicka. Maria Bello ( The Cooler ) and Tim McGraw ( Friday Night Lights ) play her parents, with Danny Pino ( Cold Case ) and Ryan Kwanten ( Summerland ) rounding out the cast.
Cynthia Nixon's in Her Prime
Cynthia Nixon's latest public quote about having no work thanks to Kim Cattrall's refusal to do a Sex and the City movie was, of course, a joke. It was also incorrect. Currently appearing in HBO's Warm Springs, Nixon's also got New York stage work lined up in two different plays for the 2005-2006 Broadway season. She'll star in a new production of Lanford Wilson's Talley's Folly and also take the title role in an off-Broadway revival of Jay Presson Allen's The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. The New Group will stage the show about a charismatic teacher and her devoted young students, and the company's artistic director, Scott Elliott, will take the helm. Meanwhile, it's probably only a matter of time before they stunt-cast her on The L Word.
Sandra Oh's Wonderful Life
Sandra Oh isn't a household name—yet. Discerning audiences know the Sideways co-star from her appearance as a lesbian in Under the Tuscan Sun and her new TV series Grey's Anatomy. And now, with four more gay-adjacent projects under her belt, the actor is poised to see her stock rise even higher with queer audiences. Currently, Oh can be seen in the Canadian indie Wilby Wonderful, a dark comedy making the gay film festival rounds, about a suicidal man in a small town. But she's also got the upcoming features Cake ( with Heather Graham ) , The Night Listener ( with Robin Williams ) , and gay director Thom Fitzgerald's HIV drama, Three Needles ( with Chloe Sevigny ) , all of which co-star Oh.
John Waters Is Here!
Until that sweet day comes when John Waters runs a cable network of his own, his fan base can content itself with their favorite director's arrival on the Here! premium cable channel. For his own film-based show, John Waters Presents, he will select and screen a batch of independent films he thinks you should see. It's just one of many original series popping up soon on Here!, a line-up that includes Triple Threat, about a relationship involving three New York men; The Elizabeth Birch Project, which will feature the former executive director of the Human Rights Campaign talking politics; and Ryan's Life, a series about a gay teenager who comes out and begins dating. |
