For their next project, Tony winners and primetime-TV kissers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are staying in the '60s, but they're
abandoning working-class Baltimore for the jet-setting life. The gay duo, who wrote the original score for Broadway's Hairspray, will
be adapting Steven Spielberg's hit 2002 movie, Catch Me If You Can, for the stage. 'The entire idea of Catch Me has just been
hatched,' Shaiman told me in an e-mail. 'Scott saw the movie script on display at the Drama Book Shop in Manhattan and yelled
'That's a musical!' Very gay of him. So I called my good friend Steve (sound effect: name dropping), and he and his partner on the film
said 'We LOVE it!' Very gay of THEM!' Shaiman and Wittman are writing over the summer, and I can't wait to check in with them later
and see how things are progressing—very gay of me! In the meantime, you can catch Shaiman's music in two upcoming movies—
Marci X and The Cat in the Hat.
Kattan and Posey Meet Adam & Steve
Saturday Night Live alum Chris Kattan and A Mighty Wind's Parker Posey are set to star in actor Craig Chester's (Kiss Me Guido)
directorial debut, Adam & Steve. The script, written by Chester, features Posey and Kattan as a straight couple whose relationship
intersects with that of gay couple Adam (Chester) and Steve (Caroline in the City's Malcolm Gets) from the late 1980s up through the
present. 'We did a reading of the script in New York a while back, and Parker and Chris definitely had this great comedic chemistry,'
Chester told me. 'So I'm thrilled they're attached to it now.' He anticipates an autumn start date. 'And yes, I'm directing/writing/acting,
which means that this movie is my Yentl. Just without all the singing and cross-dressing.'
Jodie, With Subtitles
Die-hard Jodie Foster fans might want to start French lessons before her next film is released. The actor is slated to appear in director
Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Un long dimanche de fiancailles (A Very Long Engagement). A World War I drama concerning a young
woman's search for the truth about the fate of her soldier lover, the film will star Audrey Tautou, who became France's Julia Roberts
after headlining Jeunet's international success Amelie. Foster has an uncredited supporting role in the film, which will satisfy her
reportedly longstanding desire to work with a French director. Fluent in French by the time she was a teenager, Foster was also the
valedictorian of her French-speaking Los Angeles alma mater, Lycee Francais. It's about time she put that high-school diploma to
some use.
Patric the Cat?
Brooding hottie Jason Patric is taking on one of the most conflicted closet cases on the American stage. No, not him. Or him, either.
Patric will star in a Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams' Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, in which he will play Brick, the tortured former
football star married to sexy, sultry Maggie the Cat. Ashley Judd will star alongside Patric in the production, which should hit the
boards in October. Although the 1958 film version starring Paul Newman and Elizabeth Taylor softened the gay undertones, staged
versions have played up the boozing Brick's very close relationship with a teammate. Patric fans don't have to hop a plane to New
York to see him, though: In December, he hits screens in the historical action western The Alamo. |
