In response to several hate incidents that have taken place at the Lincoln Park campus of DePaul University, students, faculty, staff, and community members spoke at a rally on the Quad ( between Fullerton Pkwy. and Belden Ave. on Seminary ) at 5 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 1.
According to Angela Papaleo, public relations chair of SPECTRUM, the university's LGBTQA group, the gathering was a rousing success. 'Close to, or maybe a little bit more than 100 people showed up in the miserable weather,' she stated. 'Members from the Chicago Anti-Bashing Network and Equal Marriage NOW came to march with us. We wore homemade T-shirts and carried signs [ that read ] 'Stop the Hate' and 'Hate is not a Vincentian Value'.'
The leader of the school offered support: 'The President of the University, Fr. Holtschneider, also came and gave a little speech which echoed his letter to SPECTRUM. Needless to say, we were all touched by his speech and cherish his support and respect,' Papaleo added.
Lastly, even passersby did their part to help. According to Papaleo, 'someone told me that a woman actually got out of her car and chanted along with us while directing us across the street—and another person gave us free pizza for fuel after the rally.'
