An estimated one thousand to two thousand women, plus a few male supporters, marched through Andersonville for the annual Dyke March. Special guest for the post-march rally was writer Chrystos. The marchers gathered at the corner of Foster and Ashland before heading north on Clark, and east on Bryn Maur to the Lake. The mood was both political and festive as dykes of all ages and genders chanted for visibility and rights. Many women ( and male supporters ) went topless, with their nipples taped to comply with the nudity laws in Illinois. Several community groups had banners in the march which, unlike Sunday's Pride Parade, does not have floats. The marchers received cheers of support as they went up Clark Street, which is affectionately called "Dykeville." |
