Going to Bistro Campagne ( 4518 N. Lincoln Ave.; www.BistroCampagne.com )even during these cold nights in Chicagois like being transported to another area, and almost another time.
This makes perfect sense as the word "campagne" means countrywhich is exactly where you feel as you dine on exquisite French cuisine. I'm told the place is especially beautiful in the summertime, as the restaurant sports a secluded outdoor patio.
The drinks are as impressive as Chef Adam Dittmer's cuisine as my guest and I ordered, respectively, a French Manhattan and a very refreshing Sunnyside.
The appetizers provided a promising start, as we dined on an onion strudel and Prince Edward Island mussels. ( Well, my friend had the mussels to herself, and she praised the quality as well as the "flavorful broth." ) The strudel was extremely tastyso much so that it didn't need the thick sauce accompanying it.
For our entrees, my friend decided to go the light route with the puff pastry filled with king trumpet, hen-of-the-woods and button mushrooms, while I went with the Amish chicken. While my chicken exceeded my high expectations, something seemed a little lacking from the pastry, although it was still very good.
We concluded our meal with dessert. She had the pain perdu ( fig-and-brown butter bread pudding with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream ), and it was just as delicious as we hoped. I ordered the apple on puff pastryand judging from the amount of apple, it was probably the most healthful dessert I've ever had. Fortunately, it also was tasty without being too sweet.
Bistro Campagne is a great place to enjoy delicious food in a romantic environment. ( The smallish rooms provide many corners, and the lighting is dim. ) However, I do plan on returning during the summermaybe I can dine on brunch outside and enjoy that gorgeous patio.
