In an interview with the Italian magazine Panorama, designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana made some statements about same-sex families that have caused a firestorm of controversy, The Huffington Post noted.
According to translations, the pairwho dated for 23 years and broke up in 2005stated that babies born through in vitro fertilization are "children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteruses for rent, semen chosen from a catalog."
"I am gay, I cannot have a child. I guess you cannot have everything in life," Dolce added. "Life has a natural course, some things cannot be changed. One is the family."
Several celebrities have responded. Well-known celebrity chef Art Smith is planning a protest party that's he's calling "Take The Hate Off The Runway."
Singer Elton John has two children via a surrogate and married longtime partner David Furnish. He posted on Instagram, "Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana"
However, the duo has responded with a boycott of its own, the UK Independent reported. "This is respect for a different opinion? #boycotteltonjohn," Gabbana posted. "It is simply arrogant not to tolerate those who think like [John], poor thing. We live in a democratic country and respect the ideas of others."
