Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner has appointed Mark Cozzi, an openly gay financial advisor and consultant, to the Illinois State Board of Investment, according to a Jan. 30 press release.
Cozzi is currently the managing partner and founder of Lincoln Park Capital Group, which he founded in 2008. He stayed with the company until 2011, when he became senior managing director of the Electrum Group, an investment firm focused on the mining sector. Cozzi rejoined Lincoln Park Capital in 2014 and served on Rauner's transition team. His charitable works include serving as event chair of the 2011 Equality Illinois gala, and membership on the board of regents of the Point Foundation.
In August 2014, Cozzi and openly gay businessman Ryan Ruskin co-authored a Chicago Sun-Times editorial defending Rauner against assertions from LGBT activists that a Rauner victory would be detrimental to their community. They wrote, "Bruce is committed to changing the path of our stateaway from deficits, uncompetitive tax and business policies, failing schools, corruption and self-serving politiciansand toward a future of economic growth and opportunity, free from the unfair influence of special interests. Bruce's policies would lead to a colossal improvement in the lives of all Illinoisans, gay and straight alike."
The Board of Investment is responsible for managing the investments of the State Employees' Retirement System, General Assembly Retirement System, Judges Retirement System and the Public Employees Deferred Compensation Plan. Board members are compensated for their expenses but do not draw a salary.
