At a fundraiser held at Pazzo's@311 Restaurant, 311 S. Wacker Dr., Cook County Clerk David Orr recognized Mercedes Santos and Theresa Volpe for their roles in bringing marriage equality to Illinois.

Santos and Volpe, along with several other couples, filed a lawsuit in state court in 2012 seeking to overturn the state's ban on same-sex marriage. Volpe thanked Orr for performing the couple's ceremony, even after they sued his office. Among other honors given out this evening, 44th Ward Ald. Tom Tunney received one for his human-rights record and efforts.

Cook County Commissioner and former mayoral candidate Jesus "Chuy" GarcÃïa was the guest speaker. Also in attendance was Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.
