From across the country, 656 warbling women representing 23 feminist choruses landed at the Loyola University lakeshore campus last week to share their love of music at Our Kind of Sound, the Sister Singers Network 10th National Choral Festival.
Hosted by Artemis Singers, Chicago's lesbian feminist chorus, the four-day event filled Mundelein Auditorium with music by, for and about women. It culminated July 4 with performances by Artemis and the two festival mass choruses Wind and Water. A reception; viewing of fireworks over the lake shore; and a dance followed the concert.
Standouts in the Artemis set were the lyrical "Press Me Onward," composed by Artemisian Karen Mooney and "Fishing with the Lesbians," a humorous tribute to Michaeline Chvatal, a longtime Artemis member who died of cancer in 2008. "Fishing" was composed by Ruth Huber, with lyrics by Huber and Artemisian Loraine Edwalds.
The thrilling 300-voice choruses Wind and Water each performed four pieces and then offered their interpretation of the premiere of "A Universal Dream," with music by Jenni Brandon, and lyrics by Brandon and Artemisian Meta Hellman.
During the Water set, audience members enjoyed a rousing rendition of "Rosa Sat" by local composer Amy Dixon-Kolar. Dixon-Kolar recently was first runner up in the Music2Life Songs for Social Change contest for her song.
Hellman and sister Artemis members Ruth Clark and Lois McCullen Parr emceed the festival. Midge Stocker and Diana Clegg served as festival planning co-chairs. More info at www.artemissingers.org . |
