The 2009 National Queer Asian & Pacific Islander Conference took place Aug. 14-16 at the University of Washington in Seattle, Wash. The National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance sponsored the event. Approximately 250 people attended. In the photo, members of Chicago i2i are shown with Shirley Tan, Jay Mercado and sons at the National Queer Asian & Pacific Islander Conference in Seattle, Wash. Tan and Mercado ( a same-sex, binational couple ) made national headlines when they fought against the deportation of Tan. Eventually, Tan was able to stay in the United States, but the bill that allowed her to stay is currently up for renewal. Tan and Mercado have become the face of the Uniting American Families Act, which seeks to include permanent LGBT partners in the existing Immigration Act. Photo courtesy of Liz Thomson |
