Longtime Chicago lesbian activist Elaine Stocker died March 3 of complications from a stroke. Funeral services were March 6 at Emmanuel, 5959 N. Sheridan in Chicago.
Elaine Stocker, DN practiced naprapathy for more than 25 years and established Healing Hands Holistic Health Center in 1979. Stocker was a licensed Doctor of Naprapathy in Illinois and New Mexico. She graduated from the Chicago National College of Naprapathy and is also a senior cranial-sacral practitioner. On her company's website, she said of her work: "This work is my passion and joy." She specialized in treatment of children, infants and moms.
Stocker was one of the original members of Women in Crisis Can Act ( WICCA ) , an important 1970s-1980s women's crisis line and support group. She was also fondly remembered for her love of drumming and involvement in the Chicago 35 women's organization. When her death was announced on Facebook, many of her clients testified to her skills at healing.
Prior to pursuing naprapathy Stocker was a University of Chicago trained psychologist and worked for the State of Illinois Department of Mental Health specializing in developmentally and mentally delayed children. Dr. Stocker is a founding member of Chicago's Holistic Pediatric Association and participated in a Pediatric Cranial Study group. |
