Windy City hip-hop heavies—and siblings—Kid Sister and Flosstradamas generated a big buzz at this year's SXSW by pairing up for a set at Malverdes. The brother/sister rappers, Melisa and Josh Young, joined dozens of musicians and businesses representing Chicago's vibrant indie music scene in Austin. Chicago artists from across the musical spectrum could be seen throughout the festival, such as songwriters Via Tanya; up-and-coming electro-pop duo My Gold Mask; and rising hip-hop stars Psalm One, Serengeti and The Cool Kids. Indie mainstay Califone played a smooth set to an electic crowd gathered at the Team Clermont showcase at La Flamingo Cantina. At a raucous showcase, avant-garde quartet Yakuza stunned metal devotees at Headhunters with a taste of their latest material, as part of the Profound Lore/20 Buck Spin Records showcase, which also featured Chicago's The Atlas Moth. Chicago musicians Plastic Crimewave Sound, Joan of Arc, Waco Brothers and Fools Gold also made their mark at venues throughout Austin.
Chicago also had a pronounced presence at this year's music conference, with panel discussions featuring Smog Veil Records owner and green business advocate Frank Mauceri and author/culture critic Jessica Hopper, among others. Chicago-based companies such as Biz3 Publicity, the Windish Agency and Bloodshot Records played host to some of the season's hottest parties and showcases.
