Mayor Rahm Emanuel's administration has said it has gone to court to try to force Empire actor Jussie Smollett to pay Chicago back for an alleged hate-crime hoax even though Cook County prosecutors dropped all charges against him, The Chicago Tribune reported.
The lawsuit resulted from Smollett not paying $130,106 by a deadline the city imposed to cover the cost of the police overtime hours expended in the investigation into his allegations.
In a brief statement issued April 11, the city's Law Department said the lawsuit against Smollett "pursues the full measure of damages" allowed under the city's ordinance forbidding false statements.
Smollett claimed he was attacked in Chicago's Streeterville neighborhood Jan. 29. However, authorities honed in on Smollett after two brothers who were alleged to have been his attackers told detectives that Smollett had paid them $3,500 to stage the attack, with a promise of an additional $500 later.
