Statement by Tim Frye, 2020 Chicago Pride Parade Coordinator:
Today we are officially cancelling the Chicago Pride Parade for 2020. We do this with total understanding and agreement that no other decision was possible. The health and safety of our participants and those watching must be the first priority. We agree with the City that events with large crowds will not be safe through the summer and we think possibly beyond that time as well.
On a personal note, cancelling the parade has special meaning for me. I didn't expect 2019 to be my husband and long-time Parade Coordinator Richard Pfeiffer's last parade, but that is how fate works. That parade ended early because of weather. We'll have to wait another year to finish it for him and, of course, keep the parade tradition going into the future.
Over the years that I helped and worked with Richard on the parade ( in one way or another during all of the 48 years we were together ), I've had in the back of my mind the feeling that every year there is at least one person in the crowd or watching on TV who suddenly realizes "I'm not alone. I can have a good life." I hope it's been more than one each year. I know they're out there. I was one. So was Richard. So were some of you reading this. I'll miss that person( s ) this year
Pride Month 2020 is very different. There are many ways still to celebrate just as there are ways to show solidarity with those who are struggling for equality just as we LGBTQ+ people have in the past and are continuing to do today. We encourage everyone to find their path and their commitment. We wish everyone health and safety.
We will see you next year.
Sincerely,
Tim Frye
