The Chicago Philharmonic will bid farewell to long-time Principal Conductor and Music Director Larry Rachleff on Friday, May 24, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. at Pick-Staiger Hall in Evanston as they present Bernstein and Schubert. This will be Rachleff's final concert with the Chicago Philharmonic after 23 years. The two powerful works featured - Leonard Bernstein's Symphony No. 1 and Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 9 — were selected by Rachleff himself.
This special evening opens with Bernstein's First Symphony subtitled "Jeremiah". This eclectic mixture of the Biblical story of the prophet Jeremiah combined with Bernstein's rich orchestration palette will carry audiences across time and stir their emotions. Texts from the Book of Lamentations will be sung within the work by soprano Susan Lorette Dunn. The other masterwork in this concert is Schubert's 9th Symphony. Also his last symphony, this work shows Schubert at the height of his melodic and musical skills. The spirit of Vienna will be palpable as Larry Rachleff's unique élan on the podium brings this favorite to life.
The concert takes place at Pick-Staiger Hall on the Northwestern University Campus, 50 Arts Circle Drive, Evanston, IL 60201. Tickets range from $25-$75. Student tickets are $10. Contact the Chicago Philharmonic Ticket Hotline at 866.811.4111 or visit www.chicagophilharmonic.org . For additional information, call the Chicago Philharmonic office at 847-866-6888.
The Chicago Philharmonic Society is a musician driven, Chicago-based not-for-profit organization originally established in 1988 by the principals of the Lyric Opera Orchestra. Over the years, the core group of Lyric players has expanded to become a musical community of over 200 professional players who form the artistic strength of the Chicago Philharmonic Orchestra. A central goal of the Society is to bring the excitement and experience of live music to audiences throughout metropolitan Chicago. The Chicago Philharmonic was recently named the official orchestra of the Joffrey Ballet. |
