Chicago House and Social Service Agency will honor Chicago Ald. Tom Tunney with the prestigious Partnership in Service Award, according to a press release from the organization. The award will be presented at the annual black-tie benefit known as the 2006 World Tour Gala: The Night of the Pharaoh on Sept. 30 at the Fairmont Hotel, 200 N. Columbus.
Tunney was elected to office in 2004 as Chicago's first openly gay alderman and has been working continuously for both the LGBT and Lakeview communities since then. Tunney has been an advocate on several fronts, from limiting property taxes for seniors and long-term residents to improving education for children.
A longtime advocate for providing assistance to individuals and families dealing with HIV/AIDS, Tunney provided professional office space for Chicago House in his own facility on Belmont. To this day, he continues to commit to Chicago House by providing discounted catering and space for meetings as well as facilitating appointments for Chicago House with city officials.
It is awarded to individuals who have lent their help and support advocating politically for issues affecting those who Chicago House serves. Previous recipients of the award, which goes to those who have helped and supported those Chicago House serves, include Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and City Treasurer Judy Rice.
