Latina chanteuse Charo took the stage by storm as she shimmied out from behind the curtain at the Dorothy Menker Theatre in Palos Hills May 14. Love was in the air as she sang recent hits like Rihanna's "Don't Stop the Music" and The Pussycat Dolls' "Hush Hush", along with her classic disco songs. In between she joked about Spanish lisps ( bring an umbrella when you talk to Antonio Banderas ) , her roots ( not Kunta Kintehers are in hanky-panky ) and keeping her maracas off the ground by exercising with Zumba classes.
While cuchi brought her the bank, many fans forget that Charo was classically trained. After dancing with the audience in the aisles, the performer raised the rafters with a bold version of "Bolero" on the strings. She described her dress as a "cucaracha with diarrhea," and then launched into more romantic guitar. Charo had taught a master class to guitar students earlier in the day at the Moraine Valley Community College to pass on her knowledge.
After the show Charo met and joked with fans. A gay couple even brought pink records from her past for her to autograph.
Her age is shrouded in mystery but upkeep has been important to her. She stated, "I used to sing for my supper when I first started; now I can't afford to eat it!"
