Cable programs came out on top at the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards, held Sept. 21 in Los Angeles, with AMC's acclaimed 'Mad Men' leading the way.
'Mad' became the first basic-cable program to take the best drama award. The show is set in the advertising world of 1960s New York.
On the acting front, Bryan Cranston won best actor in a drama series for his work in AMC's 'Breaking Bad,' and Glenn Close took the best actress award for FX's 'Damages.' Close's co-star, Zeljko Ivanek, was best supporting actor while veteran actress Dianne Wiest won best supporting actress for FX's 'In Treatment.'
Regarding comedy, however, network TV generally prevailed as NBC's '30 Rock' took best series and the show's Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin winning for best actress and actor, respectively. In the supporting actor category, Jeremy Piven of HBO's 'Entourage' upset out actor Neil Patrick Harris of CBS' 'How I Met Your Mother,' while Jean Smart won best supporting actress for ABC's 'Samantha Who?'
During the Creative Emmys, held Sept. 13 in Los Angeles ( and co-hosted by Harris and Sarah Chalke ) , lesbian actress Cynthia Nixon—best-known for 'Sex and the City'—won for a guesting on an episode of NBC's 'Law & Order: SVU.'
The main Emmys show—with the five reality-show host nominees serving as emcees—was roundly criticized, with WGN-TV's entertainment reporter, Dean Richards, calling it 'the worst awards show [ he's ] ever seen.' The San Francisco called the program 'awful.'
