Cook County will implement a mandatory employee vaccination policy, a press release announced.

The county wishes "to ensure that members of the public who interact with county employees and our facilities are safe when doing so, as well as to ensure the safety and well-being of employees while at work," Cook County President Toni Preckwinkle's statement read.

Employees in the Offices under the jurisdiction of the County Board President and covered by the Cook County Employment Plan have until October 15 to comply with the policy or provide a verifiable medical or religious exemption.

The county's separately elected offices are urged to follow suit.

Cook County is the second largest county in the United States, representing 5.2 million residents in Illinois.
