Columbia College got a boost to its burgeoning gay and lesbian scene this spring with the official establishment of the Office of Gay and Lesbian Student Affairs.
The office has been in the works for several months at Columbia, whose downtown Chicago campus has an increasingly active GLBT student organization, Columbia Pride.
"Gay is in the air," quipped Columbia instructor Victoria Shannon in the March 14 Windy City Times. "Things are just happening around here at last."
Shannon, who recently revived GLBT studies courses at Columbia, will serve as the office's first coordinator. Now that the program has gotten the college's approval, she is looking for physical space and funding.
"I think that we're really going to take off," Shannon said.
Recent gay activities include a queer film night, a Web site for Columbia Pride, a brochure of GLBT-friendly faculty and a GLBT studies class. |
